The box is open, the battery has charge and the first ride is tempting. Give yourself ten calm minutes first. A short setup check helps you catch shipping damage, incomplete assembly and unfamiliar controls before they become surprises on the road.
This checklist is for a new JOYOR owner preparing for the first ride. It complements—not replaces—the manual for your exact model. JOYOR scooters differ in their folding systems, tyres, displays, lights and road approvals, so model-specific instructions always take priority.
1Confirm the model and open the correct manual
Start with the model name on the scooter, packaging or order information. Do not assume that instructions for a similar-looking JOYOR use the same display, tyre pressure, charger or folding mechanism.
Keep the manual available while you assemble and check the scooter. The JOYOR after-sales support centre lets you search for the correct product manual by model.
2Inspect the scooter and complete the assembly
Check the box contents and inspect the frame, stem, handlebar, brake levers, wheels, cables, lights and charging port. Look for impact marks, cracked parts, pinched cables or anything that appears displaced after transport.
Install only the parts described in the model instructions, usually including the handlebar or controls. Use the correct fasteners and tools. If a specification or tightening value is given, follow it; do not compensate for uncertainty by overtightening.

3Lock the folding mechanism fully
Raise the stem into the riding position, close the main latch and engage the secondary safety lock where fitted. The exact sequence varies by model. When locked, the stem should feel secure rather than merely standing upright.
Hold the front brake and gently move the handlebar forward and back. Stop if you feel significant play, clicking or movement at the folding joint. Do not ride a scooter whose stem or latch is not securely locked.
If the mechanism is unfamiliar, use the step-by-step JOYOR folding and unfolding guide before lifting or riding the scooter.
4Check both tyres and wheels
Inspect the tread and sidewalls for cuts, bulges, cracks, embedded debris or an uneven fit on the rim. Pneumatic tyres can lose pressure while stored, even when the scooter is new. A thumb test is not accurate enough for a small scooter tyre.
Measure pressure when the tyres are cool and follow the manual or tyre marking for your exact model. Do not copy another scooter’s pressure and never exceed the stated maximum. The JOYOR tyre-pressure guide explains how to inspect and inflate pneumatic tyres.
5Test the brakes before the throttle
With the scooter switched off, squeeze each brake lever and walk the scooter forward slowly. The response should feel firm, consistent and predictable. Check that cables and hoses follow their intended routing and are not stretched or pinched by the handlebar.
During the first powered test, ride only at walking pace in an open area and practise smooth stops. A little disc sound can have several causes, but weak braking, a lever reaching the grip or severe rubbing should be inspected before normal riding.
6Learn the display, buttons and riding modes
Before moving, identify the power control, riding-mode control, lights, indicators and horn fitted to your scooter. Check what the battery bars, speed unit and warning symbols mean. Button combinations are not universal across JOYOR displays.
Begin in the lowest suitable riding mode and keep factory settings unless the manual or JOYOR support gives a clear reason to change them. Incorrect P-code values can affect speed readings, starting behaviour and other functions. T6 and T10 owners can use the dedicated display and button guide.
7Test every light and warning device
Switch on the headlight and tail light. Squeeze the brake levers and confirm that the brake light responds where fitted. Test the turn signals and horn or bell fitted to your model. Do this in daylight as well as low light—a lamp that glows faintly can be difficult to judge outdoors.
Also check that reflectors and lamps are clean, visible and secure. If a light does not operate, diagnose it before relying on the scooter in traffic or darkness.
8Check the battery, charger and route reserve
Inspect the charging port, plug and cable for damage or contamination. Use the original charger or one explicitly approved for the exact scooter and battery. Charge on a firm, dry, ventilated surface and keep the charger uncovered.
There is no need to invent a special first-charge ritual. Follow the model manual and indicator behaviour. For the first journey, choose a short route and leave a generous battery reserve; displayed range changes with temperature, hills, rider weight, wind, speed and tyre pressure.
Charging warning: do not connect a charger to a wet port. Stop using or charging a battery that is swollen, leaking, physically deformed, unusually hot or producing an abnormal smell.
9Prepare yourself—and the legal paperwork
Wear a properly fitted helmet and footwear that gives stable contact with the deck. Avoid loose straps or clothing near moving parts. Carry only what you can secure without steering one-handed, and never take a passenger on a single-rider scooter.
Public-road rules differ by country and sometimes by vehicle version. Confirm where you may ride, the applicable speed and equipment rules, and any age, helmet, registration or insurance requirements before using public roads.
For Germany, this applies only to the correct ABE-approved model: check the vehicle documents and FIN, obtain the required liability insurance and attach the valid insurance sticker before public-road use. Follow the full JOYOR Germany ABE and insurance guide.
10Take a controlled five-minute first ride
Choose a flat, dry, traffic-free area with plenty of space. Place one foot securely on the deck, push off gently and add light throttle only after the scooter is balanced. Keep both hands on the handlebar, look ahead and avoid sharp steering inputs.
Practise starting, straight-line riding, wide turns and smooth braking at low speed. Learn how the scooter feels before adding traffic, hills, wet surfaces or longer distance.
Save this first-ride checklist
| Area | Ready when… |
|---|---|
| Assembly | The correct parts are installed and visible hardware is secure. |
| Folding lock | The latch and safety lock are fully engaged with no significant play. |
| Tyres and brakes | Tyres match model guidance and both brakes respond predictably. |
| Controls and lights | You understand the controls and every fitted light and warning device works. |
| Battery and legality | The route has enough reserve and public-road requirements are complete. |
After the first five minutes, stop and repeat a quick visual check. Look for new looseness, rubbing, unusual heat, warning icons or sounds that were not present before. Then make the same essentials part of every ride. The complete JOYOR maintenance guide provides a practical every-ride, weekly and monthly routine.
Frequently asked questions
Should I fully charge a new electric scooter before the first ride?
Follow the charging instructions for your model. Starting with sufficient charge makes the first test easier, but avoid universal “first charge” rules that are not in the manual.
Can I ride immediately after assembly?
Only after the folding lock, tyres, brakes, controls, lights, battery and local road-use requirements have been checked. Begin with a low-speed test away from traffic.
Why does the throttle not respond from a standstill?
Some scooters use kick-start behaviour and require a small push before the throttle engages. Check the manual for your exact model rather than changing display settings at random.
What if something feels loose or unfamiliar?
Stop and compare the scooter with the model manual or assembly video. Do not use normal riding as a diagnostic test for a loose folding joint, weak brakes or damaged tyre. Contact JOYOR support with clear photos, the model and order details if needed.
Guidance and images: official JOYOR Prime manual centre, assembly hub, folding guide, tyre guide, maintenance guide and Germany ABE guide. Always follow the documentation for the exact scooter and current local rules.
